1989 Grammy Awards – Complete List of Winners and Nominees

On February 22, 1989, the 31st Annual Grammy Awards honored music from October 1, 1987, to September 30, 1988. George Michael's incredibly successful and critically acclaimed album Faith won Album of the Year, a testament to his triumphant transition from Wham!
to solo superstardom and his pop-R&B versatility. Bobby McFerrin's whimsical and innovative a cappella hit "Don't Worry, Be Happy" won Record of the Year.
Tracy Chapman, with her profound songwriting and distinctive voice, was deservedly named Best New Artist. Other prominent winners included Anita Baker for R&B and U2 for rock.
